Mother Centre
This is our umbrella strategic plan for HUMES. All our campaigns fall under the guidance of the Mother Centre. The long term vision of Hungry Minds Educational Society (HUMES) is to build a permanent training centre at Kisowera.
The Church of Uganda has donated right of use to five acres of land so that we can one day realize our vision.
Clean Drinking Water
When HUMES asked community members to prioritize their needs, clean drinking water was consistently the first requirement. The community felt that if they were not able to stay healthy, or if water collection took up most of their day, they would not be able to participate in other opportunities to learn and grow.
Kisowera members live in extreme poverty and city utilities have not reached their rural neighbourhood. Residents living and schooling near HUMES were collecting water from either: a broken spring at the bottom of a steep and unsafe hill which slowed to a trickle during the dry season; a fouled borehole or feces contaminated ditch
.
With money donated by The three Rotary Clubs of Whitehorse, Canada, four rural communities have received boreholes that produce a steady source of clean drinking water. Approximately 2,000 people have benefitted from these improved conditions.
Pork and Beans
Our first income generating project was in keeping with our mother centre theme. We bought our mother pig and she produced 4 piglets in 2007. Learners are being shown how to care for pigs, enhance gardening techniques and create income from the sale of pigs and the beans they are growing in their gardens.
Thanks to donations from individual Canadians, Hungry Minds provided the funds to establish a village bank in Namubiru community.
Our nine learners decided each would borrow an equal portion of the donated money to enhance her income generating project. The group decided to be responsible for ensuring all loans are paid back in full with interest. If one member defaults, all others must cover the repayments. Full repayments with interest will ensure their village bank funds continue to grow so they can provide loans to other learners. This project has brought women together to support each other which is very empowering.
Back to School
When the orphanage in Kisowera lost their American sponsors and closed down due to lack of funding, Ugandan guardians were found who were willing to house each of the sixteen children, but money to pay school fees, doctor’s bills or buy supplies was beyond the reach of most of them.
The Social Justice club from FH Collins Secondary School in Whitehorse Canada, raised enough money to sponsor six of them to stay in school for five years.
100% of all donations are used to educate and improve conditions for impoverished Ugandans.
